Interviews at cmpcc in Cochabamba

Interview with Tom Goldtooth, executive director of the Indigenous Environmental Network.
by Emilie and Thea

Why are you at the cmpcc here in Cochabamba?
"It is necessary to demonstrate to the government and the industrialized world, that we are people throughout the world who are concerned about what is going on. The prospect for recognizing the rights of mother earth is very important."

Is that your main focus here?
"That is the main focus that we believe. Because we believe that people throughout the world, especially people from industrialized societies have lost their focus, have lost their understanding of the sacredness of mother earth. It is very important that people in Europe, people in Africa, people in India and Russia, and throughout the world, look towards indigenous people for understanding of what our relationship is with the mother earth. Industrialized society has removed people from their community, removed them from their understanding of what their responsibility is. Now we have cooperations which have more power than people do. We have cooperations comming in and literally raping our land. A lot of poeple are dying and getting sick of contamination. The world has to move away from that. We can´t wait for it anylonger. That is why we are here."

Do you think anything will be done here at cmpcc?
"This is a start. Definitely a start."

Interview with Margot Laure, Aymara Indian from La Paz.
by Emilie og Thea

Why are you at the cmpcc here in Cochabamba?
"We are here for the earth and for Pachamama. We have to make people understand that we are here for mother earth, the earh is not here for us. We are all damaging the earth. The leaders are damaging the earth, peolpe are damaging the earth and ourselves also, are damaging the earth. We have to make everyone aware of this.
We believe that everyone is recognized as sons and daugthers of mother earth and it is not only human beings who has life. Evertyhing has life. We are all together.
We are here to make offerings to mother earth, that is why we burn theese coca leaves, wood and dirt. The wood is the cosmic around the earth and the dirt underneath is the earth. It is a duality. In out culture, there is always two of everthing. There is always a male and a female part. "
